Hw # 45

Hirshes theory and Sizer"s thoery do contradict each other because Hirshes theory is about not only learning required skills for reading comprehension but also a background knowledge on what one is learning. He also wanted schools to have a specific curriculm so the students could have deeper understnading than most. While Sizer's theory is all about
" that the student is a valued worker in that community, with the teacher in the role of mentor or coach" meaning student plays bigger role than versus in hirshes theory where its all based on curriculm given. He believed that schools should no longer have "one - size - fits - all educational methods, no more standardized tests which Hirshes did believe in giving tests to make sure students did learn the specific curriculm. they could be adapted together and have a bit of both allowing students to experience learning both ways.

Before came to SOF I had never known about things like Habits of Mind or to think more outside the "box". I just learned what i was given, a specific curriculm. All my friends and I were learning same things, even if in different school. But at SOF we learned about habits of mind; how to look at the significance of the situation or looking at it through alternate views. I do believe there are teachers who are inspired by Hirsh at SOF, that they teach us from a curriculm which all the following students after me will learn as well.

Reading about these theorists made me realize that the way education can be different but how can we know which one is actually effective? Could compare SOF to another school who has more of Hirshe's theory? And which education helps more outside of school?

The first source: liberal arts specifically answered a question our class asked how is any of what we're learning going to help us in the future? This article answers by saying it is not the specific content that is important the way we are learning it, to "digest it" , to analyze, make our own conclusions or opinions about it. it is a struggle many teachers have is always being questioned of their curriculum and how important it is. This reminds me of how SOF has the habits of mind which help us analyze things, find significance, etc as a different way of teaching instead of just teaching specific content like linear functions or ionic bonding etc and moving on. But in high school there are limits to what one can learn, they are all generalized classes and have specific curriculum for us to take in order to graduate. My question is who decides what students should be learning every semester and every year? ( For example chemistry, algebra etc.) I believe a top priority for schools is to be able to show how significant the stuff they are learning really is, because usually students never get an answer to this and become discouraged. There are limits schools have that don't allow to change the entire curriculum every U.S. high school or allowing students to take only classes they would like.

With the second article i believe it is true that education does play a part in making society " prosperous" and more productive. The reason why we've had an economic crisis is because in high school we aren't taught how to open bank accounts, manage credit cards, pay off our debt, pay our bills etc. and so, many go into debt starting from entering college to possibly their retirement. In many countries they learn how to improve their society for the future while we mostly just live in the moment and just "patch" never fully fix something. But of course there are limits to what we can be taught and it brings up the argument been having for years of whether should having more life skills classes or core classes( like we have now.) But i think should have one life class to make it balanced, best of both worlds and it will allow students to have at least one class all will enjoy and learn things they won't question.

In third source ( USATODAY.com) tells the line we are always told from birth " go to school and get good grades, so you can get a good high - paying job." But the article says nowadays this " American Dream" is nearly impossible, because high - paying American jobs are going to begin disappearing. Which might make some say then why should i go to school if either way it will be hard to get a job much less a high - payed one. But article continues to say about how it has become more about the money. the numbers are what are most important than the loyal employee, causing for less employment. For those who get out of school expecting the better life only to face the fact that they are going to be unemployed for awhile. It also talks of the the need of more entrepreneurs who can create more real jobs. Its more about what you must expect after graduation, how maybe what we've always been told may not mean anything anymore if it won't actually guarantee a GOOD job.

In the last source it is of a teacher who believes “If you had an amazing teacher who was talented and passionate and given the freedom and support to teach well,” she said, “that was just 100 times more important than anything else.” The most important thing is not curriculum or the class size but the teacher, a teacher who actually cares and is passionate about their students. Reminded about when Ms. D came in and talked about how she liked to connect with students and she seemed like a teacher Ms. Kenny would like. And like our school, she didn't believe passing a standardized test made the student. She wants other things from her students; " I wanted them to be wholesome in character. I wanted them to be compassionate and to see life as a responsibility to give something to the world. I wanted them to have a sophisticated intellect. I wanted them to be avid readers, the kind of person who always has trouble putting a book down. And I raised them to be independent thinkers, to lead reflective and meaningful lives.” And from the success of her schools she must be doing something right, I also believe teacher plays a huge part in our education. If my teacher isn't passionate or enjoys teaching, it doesn't help my own learning process it makes me feel like why should it be important for me to learn if my teacher doesn't care or teaches poorly. It also says how in charter schools teachers can be fired for poor performance, which I thought went for all schools. But it should be known form beginning whether or not the teacher they are hiring fulfill the requirements Ms. Kenny has. At the same time isn't also important to have passionate students? Or does having a passionate teacher lead to that?

"Math and Reading Help." The Importance of High School. 2003 - 2010. Web. 4 Mar 2010.

It explains how important a high school diploma is, and how it will affect your life if you do or do not have it. Like job - wise, it is " a gateway to post - secondary education, better employment and a successful college experience. It gives evidence giving a percentage of number of jobs that require a type of education. ( 60 %!!)

Shows how society makes makes education seem the most neccessary "step" to a successful life or job. But when in reality there are many people in jobs they like and did not require full college affect. Then again there those who are not. so how do we make the decision of deciding if education is reall neccessary for a job or a "good" job?

Kolowich, Steve. "Tuition-free, online education? Try University of the People." (2/22/2010): 1. Web. 4 Mar 2010. .

Talks about how easy it is to attend college, that it acessible to any one with a internet connection. They ask questions like " How do you build quality programs without charging tuition? How effective would the project's peer-to-peer pedagogical model be in classrooms of students from vastly different cultural and educational traditions? Who would accredit such an operation at a time when the perceived value — even necessity — of a postsecondary education is ascendant in virtually every country?" In the end this way to get an education without leaving home but question is does it work?

Shows how society will do anything that is possible to get our generation and coming generation to follow the norm of society; must attend college to have the "good life" by using todays technology. Every single teen now own a computer and can access this new way to attend college, without the excuse of not having time for it, too far away, too expensive, etc. This supprts the idea of society trying to make us follow its norms and role of playing the student and getting an education.

"Expanding higher education can boost job chances for early school-leavers too." 18/09/2007. OECD, Web. 4 Mar 2010. .

Gives examples of how everywhere not just the U.S. students are deciding to recieve higher education (college) because of the reason that jobs are more attainable versus if you don't. just like the first article it gives percentages of how number people getting the jobs are those who choose to go to college.

Same Questions in every Interview

Amber

1) Is your social life more important than your grades?

I think they both are. But for society, education is more important because later in life our grades will be more important than how many friends one had. But I guess to be content we must balance them.

2) How does society and school connect?

Society and school the material we learn in school will impact the role we will play in society. In school we are being molded from the knowledge and insights from other students which will help us make better decisions to impact society in a positive way.

3) Do you think we really have the choice to go to any hs?

It depends on how well your doing in school and the choices we make.

Yasmine

1) Yes, because I don't find the idea of school important. Gets in the way of social life because can't go out when I have to write an essay.

2) Grades are really important in society, so we can have a good job. Don't think that should be how to evaluate if you are going to be good worker or better than the one who never finished high school.

3) I don't think so because they don't give people a fair chance.

Andy

1) No

2) In a thousand ways, for instance society teaches how school is set up and school affects how newer members of society see the world.

3) Some people do. I think it's fair, if school has a certain theme then they should only accept the kids they want. ( i gave the ex. LaGuardia) I'd prefer if SOF only accepted kids that actually wanted to be in SOF.

Me

1) I find that it does, it can be stressing at time because I can spend periods of time only doing my homework, college class, doing nothing but work. But during this time, I feel disconnected with the world, so then I stop and then spend another period doing nothing but hang with my friends and family but then again I realized I'm behind and become stressed, so i go back to work. Making my life really crazy because I lose in touch with people or I my grades start going down. Hopefully I can find a better balance of these two in my life.

2) Society makes school seem like it's needed to succeed in life and it usually does. This leads to competition in schools and people doing all they can to get themselves or their children an education. But why does society make it necessary all the time? Ever since your born and start school, you are told ( or at least I was.) that finishing school, getting good grades was the most important thing to have the best life you can.

3) I dont think so, i believe that sometimes it's hard to get into school because it is very competitive or can be unfair.

Angela

1) No, because I don't really like school, and as long as i have a passing grade. but i do try to balance it out, to make sure i don't fail.

2) I don't know, i guess i should stay in school and learn it. In order to sucess in society or be in important, you have to have an education.

3) Yes, we have the choice because we decide to go and as long as you measure up to school's requirements. But this system can be flawed, so some get in and some don't

Questions

1. When did school become free?

2. Do we really have the choice to go to any school?

3. How do society and school connect?

Ideas

1. Education is viewed highly, reason why those with more education usually get the better & well paid job.

2. Grades are important in school but for some it gets in the way of their social life. And vice versa.

3. the idea of having life skills maybe not as a core class but a regular class. So can have the balance of a practical class and a relevant class all in one day.

Experiences

1 . To be seen as smart in class but also in hallway are equally important especially in high school. But not to try too hard or else will be seen as a nerd or fake.

2. Learning to listen to authority, because your always being told you are not an adult yet, but even when you are, not as experienced as the older adult.

3. Your actions in school are what make you the "bad kid" or "good student" teachers and students will see you as this until you graduate.

Part B:

The aspect of going to school for most of your life, never having the choice to learn what one wants can be irritating. Not that everything I've learned I haven't enjoyed, for example I might not get the relevance of algebra in real life. But i actually enjoy and find it easy to solve problems. Or in history I like learning about different cultures but we usually study about the wars and revolutions, why?

When ask teachers how what we are learning will be useful in the future they get annoyed and tell us because its important. But why is it important? there probably answers to this but if one knows what wants to study why do we must waste years learning instead of starting career or traveling instead.

HISTORY VIDEO PROJECT ME AND PROJECT PARTNERS from Yurelis Ramirez on Vimeo.

Director - Larche G
"Cool Chicks" - Bryanna W. & Jessica C.
Investigators: Yurelis R. & Michelle G
"Cool Sidekick" - Yasmine J.

In this video Bryanna hears a rumor that Jessica C. was saying Bryanna can't read b/c she's dumb. Bryanna tells a friend Yasmine to video her because she wants to be a youtube celebrity. The video depicts a cool person trying to get attention by starting a fight.

1. Insights you get about cool is how people's need for attention leads to them being cool, and the reason they need this attention is because they know no one actually cares. People will realize that we allow people to do this and even contribute to it like very character in the video did. Questions one might ask is why do people do this? or why do we allow this?

2. My role and Yurelis in the background are to instigate the fight but in the end we try to split it up. We first thought of what our story would be, then got an empty classroom to perform it in. Then we practiced a couple a times until we got our parts down. And voila video is made.

3. I think art is cool because it is a different way to give your thoughts and views on cool without actually writing anything and people can interpret it many ways.

Hw # 37 - FINAL DRAFT

“ It still loves the night and flirts with living on the edge.” (Cool rules)

Flipping through magazines or looking around on streets, you see cool. Cool people, cool technology, cool trends, etc. But what is cool? The definition given by dictionary is “ The best way to say something is neat-o, awesome, or swell. The phrase "cool" is very relaxed, never goes out of style, and people will never laugh at you for using it, very convenient for people who don't care about what's "in.” (Urban dictionary) "Cool" is an essence, an attitude, a skill only portrayed by the very best actors, cool is eternal (Matthew). Cool can mean a lot of things, it can be the sense of lifestyle one lives, the way one looks or an object one wears. Even though everyone has a different idea of cool, it is created by the roles one plays day by day. These roles we play make us who we are and are shaped by all that surrounds us.

Every single person has a role they play and it usually changes depending whether at home, work or school. One might say role? Does that mean that my whole life is just play, it’s not real? No but we do fall into little scripts daily but it doesn’t necessarily mean the performances can’t be real. When I lost a friend, I cried and mourned for him so I played the role of the mourner or friend. But it didn’t mean my “script” was fake, because I really was upset and sad when he passed away. These roles we get from different sources make up our identity and can be authentic at times or not.

One of the main things that shape the roles we play is family and friends, starting from when we are born. Our parents raise us and try to impress the certain values, ideas and lifestyle they have upon us. And it affects our view on cool as well. We are all the products of our family and they are the product of their families (Andy). So we begin to create an identity that works in our home, for me it was being the “good girl”. Who didn’t throw a tantrum when older brother made me be Robin, when really I wanted to be Batman, always ate at the dinner table, was respectful, etc. But my parents weren’t the only ones who influenced me in the scripts I began to play, my older brother also did. When I was younger, he was my idol, tried to listen to whatever he was listening to or play the videogames he would and try to be as good (sadly I never was).

These identities we grow up with to fit in our families just might not work in the real world, like in school, work or street. When we begin school all the kids soon influence us as well. Kids, who we realize did not grow up like us, so have different ideas of what cool is. For me in elementary school it was more about making friends, friends who my mother knew their mothers and they knew her, the “good” boys and girls. But in middle school I began to choose my own friends and cool became so much more important because for them it was as well. Because I grew up with no sisters, I watched girls in school to see what a girl “should” wear and what was “in.” It was hard because my identity at home didn’t work at school and vice versa, for example wearing the prettiest skirt was cool at school but at home it was cooler passing certain level in the hottest videogame of the moment.

Once we begin high school, as adolescents being cool is what we all desire, but one must work harder to adapt to what our certain group of friends find cool. The elements you need to ever be cool, ask any teenager are being good – looking, popular, trendy, wearing the name brand clothes, having sex, being confident, and so much more depending on what friends we surround ourselves with. We start to play scripts one might not want to play but need to in order to be cool. We create different identities for ourselves that aren't original but come from other sources because we are trying to impress others and live up to our audience’s expectations of cool all the time (Larche).

Our family and friends isn’t the only thing that surrounds us and creates our identity, death does too. All around us people are dying and we all know we will too some point, so one thinks what the hell am I doing here? Thus we create an identity shaped by our surroundings making us feel important. This sense of importance helps “cover” the hole of emptiness we have due to the fact that we will die and soon everyone we know will as well and it’ll be like we never existed. So we choose to play roles instead of crawling up in ball shaking and crying about something we can’t change, one must die someday.

Even when we act cool or create a cool pose its just another way to “ keep the lid on the most intense feelings and violent emotions.” (Cool Rules) And most of these emotions and feelings come from us trying to spend our lives trying to become complete before we die. We always want something a lover, clothing, home, money, etc but it’s never enough, we always want more. So we continue to play scripts that make us feel good but this never lasts, making our whole life a performance.

Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

And then is heard no more. It is a tale

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

Signifying nothing. – Hamlet: Shakespeare (Act 5, Scene 5)

We try to live a meaningful life, but in the end it means nothing we die and our life’s performance “is heard of no more.” In this life we try to feel important, be cool, or play roles and I think this is what Shakespeare meant when he says, “ That struts and frets his hour upon the stage.” Death is just another thing that surrounds us and shapes who we are.

Whether it is our family, friends or death that shape us, they help us create our identities. Identities that have their own idea of what one finds cool. We spend our lives trying to play these roles or scripts that are influenced by what we are surrounded by, so our family, society or friends approve us. But we must also remember to not forget what we want as well. And how do we know what we want? Well I’m still figuring out that myself.
